The Stage is Set for Greatness: Devonta Smith Poised to Etch His Name in Super Bowl Lore

Posted on February 8, 2025 by admin

Going into Super Bowl 59, much has been made about the Philadelphia Eagles offense and, in particular, the passing game.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts has seen and heard plenty of criticism over the past couple of months and most of it has been unwarranted. Whether or not there’s validity behind the argument that the passing game has suffered, the fact of the matter is, Philly’s offense is completely based around Saquon Barkley and the run game.

The Eagles are winning, too, so all of the nonsensical blame is, well, nonsensical.

A big part of this team’s passing game for four years, though, has been wide receiver DeVonta Smith. The 2021 first-round pick has averaged 77 receptions and over 1,000 receiving yards in each of his seasons thus far, but the 26-year-old could be in line for one huge accolade come Sunday night.

DeVonta Smith could become one of five players ever to achieve a trio of illustrious milestones

The big game on Sunday of course features the Eagles taking on the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59.

If the Eagles were to win on Sunday evening, Smith could become one of just five players in history to win a Heisman Trophy, National Championship and a Super Bowl.

The other four players to accomplish this feat? The list includes Marcus Allen, Tony Dorsett, Charles Woodson and Reggie Bush. Three of those four have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with Bush being the lone exception.

Smith won his Heisman Trophy back in 2021 following his 2020 season with Alabama that saw him catch 117 passes for 1,856 yards and a whopping 23 touchdowns. That same college season, Smith and the Crimson Tide won a National Championship, but it was the second of his college career as he also won it with Alabama back in 2017.

The Eagles wide receiver isn’t the only player looking to make some kind of history on Sunday, either. Barkley is chasing something that has never been done before, while defensive tackle Jalen Carter looks to make his own mark in the history books.
