However, with Russell Wilson now making waves in the media, the Steelers have a better idea of which player they should prioritize—one who actually wants to be there.
According to Justin Fields’ Instagram, he posted a picture from a game against the Los Angeles Chargers and tagged the Steelers’ official account. This public show of support suggests that despite being benched after leading the team to a 4-2 record, Fields remains eager to play for Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Wilson appears to be maneuvering for leverage, which could ultimately work against him.
Justin Fields’ Commitment Could End the Steelers’ Quarterback Controversy
It seems this was the Steelers’ plan all along—bring in Wilson as a short-term solution, then transition to Fields. If that was the case, the team should not allow Wilson’s tactics to distract them from their original goal.
Fields is young, familiar with the system, and has the potential to be the long-term answer the Steelers have been searching for. The quarterback market is unpredictable, and while there are some available options, none are as viable as investing in a young, experienced player like Fields. Drafting a rookie quarterback carries significant risk, whereas Fields presents a more reliable, immediate solution.
While Fields may not instantly turn the Steelers into champions, he has the potential to develop into a franchise quarterback—if given a real opportunity. If Joe Flacco can come out of retirement and be given a chance, Fields certainly deserves one. Flacco’s best years are behind him, whereas Fields’ are still ahead.
The Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers have demonstrated the benefits of properly developing quarterbacks, and the Steelers should follow that model. With Fields expressing a desire to remain in Pittsburgh, it makes sense to move forward with him. Meanwhile, Wilson did not perform well enough to command the leverage he is trying to exert. Bringing him back could create unnecessary drama that the Steelers should avoid.
