The Green Bay Packers are set to get what promises to be a very busy offseason underway. One major storyline is surrounding the team right now.
Jaire Alexander could end up being on his way out of town this offseason. All signs have pointed towards the Packers strongly considering moving on from Alexander. Unfortunately, the star cornerback has not been able to stay healthy and has become completely unreliable.
With that in mind, Green Bay could consider trading or cutting Alexander and looking to find a top-tier replacement for him.
Bleacher Report has suggested a compelling name for the Packers to target in NFL free agency to help replace Alexander. That name is Los Angeles Chargers’ free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.
Samuel also has a connection already in Green Bay.
“The Green Bay Packers would be wise to give Samuel a look, as they continue to search for a high-end complement to Jaire Alexander. Packers passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley previously coached Samuel as L.A.’s defensive coordinator.”
During the 2024 NFL season, Samuel ended up playing in just four games due to a shoulder injury. Back in 2023, however, he was a huge part of the Chargers’ defense.
In that season, Samuel played all 17 games. He racked up 63 tackles, two interceptions, and 13 defended passes. Each year he has been mostly healthy, which is in three of his four seasons, he has had at least two interceptions and 11 defended passes.
At just 25 years old, Samuel would be a long-term addition. His play style would also fit well in defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s aggressive system.
Should the Packers choose to move on from Alexander, they would need a top-tier cornerback who can cover opposing No. 1 wide receivers. Samuel has already proven himself capable of doing that throughout his first four NFL seasons. This would be a perfect move for Green Bay to make.
Of course, even if the Packers choose to keep Alexander, adding Samuel could still make sense. He would simply be an elite No. 2 cornerback and insurance for Alexander.
Only time will tell what Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay front office choose to do. Keep an eye on Samuel as a potential target when free agency opens up.
