SB Nation’s Jarrett Bailey reported that Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton might be moving to Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers could not complete a trade for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel. However, Samuel may not have been the ideal choice for Pittsburgh’s receiving corps addition.
According to SB Nation’s Jarrett Bailey, this wasn’t the case, as he reported on Feb. 27 that Courtland Sutton, the Denver Broncos wide receiver, is the player to “watch closely” with Pittsburgh this offseason.
“The Steelers have had an interest in Sutton since the previous offseason.” They contacted the Denver Broncos several times, both prior to and during the 2024 NFL Draft, in an attempt to arrange a trade, but were declined each time. “This offseason could be unique, however,” Bailey wrote.
“I’ve heard it ‘appears that Courtland Sutton might be on his way to Pittsburgh.’”
Bailey mentioned that “a source” informed him that Sutton would “enjoy” playing with Russell Wilson once more. The quarterback and receiver played together for two years from 2022 to 2023 with the Broncos.
Sutton has accumulated approximately $55 million during his seven-season NFL career.
Could the Steelers Ultimately Obtain Courtland Sutton?
As Bailey noted, Sutton has been associated with the Steelers for almost a year. A reason for this has been the connection between Wilson and Sutton.
Sutton recorded two 750-yard seasons during Wilson’s two years with the Broncos. In 2023, Sutton also recorded 10 receiving touchdowns.
Sutton experienced an even more successful 2024 with rookie QB Bo Nix. He achieved a new career high with 81 receptions and marked his first 1,000-yard season since his Pro Bowl year in 2019. Sutton also scored eight touchdowns.
However, Sutton will become a free agent next year, and Denver may see him as dispensable even before 2025.
“According to Bailey, he’s in the last year of his contract with the Broncos, and Denver has no intention of compensating him.” Therefore, it is logical to trade him for draft picks if you’re the Broncos.
“If this materializes, a wide receiver pair of Sutton and George Pickens would vastly surpass what the Steelers possessed last season.”
Bailey submitted the report on February 27. Nonetheless, it becomes increasingly relevant with Samuel unavailable.
The Washington Commanders consented to trade a fifth-round selection to the 49ers for Samuel. Analysts indicated this offseason that Pittsburgh might be a destination for the All-Pro receiver of 2021.
