After a slow start to the NFL’s “legal tampering” period in free agency, the Detroit Lions finally made a move late Tuesday evening, securing veteran defensive tackle Roy Lopez. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Lions have reached an agreement with Lopez on a one-year contract worth $4.35 million.

Lopez, 27, brings valuable experience to Detroit’s defensive front. Originally drafted by the Houston Texans in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, he spent two seasons in Houston before joining the Arizona Cardinals. Over the past two seasons with Arizona, he proved to be a reliable presence on the defensive line, particularly as a run-stopping nose tackle. In the 2024 season, Lopez started all 16 games for the Cardinals, recording 28 total tackles and one sack. Over the course of his four-year career, he has started 50 games, demonstrating both durability and consistency.

The addition of Lopez addresses a key need for the Lions, who were looking to reinforce their defensive interior. His ability to clog running lanes and take on double teams will be an asset to Detroit’s defensive scheme, potentially freeing up other defensive playmakers to make more impactful plays. While Lopez may not be known for his pass-rushing ability, his physical presence in the trenches will be crucial in strengthening the Lions’ run defense.

Lopez becomes the second major free-agent acquisition for the Lions during this negotiating period, joining cornerback D.J. Reed. The Lions’ front office has been deliberate in its approach, targeting players who can make an immediate impact without overspending in the early wave of free agency. Both Lopez and Reed will officially be able to sign their contracts on Wednesday, marking the official start of the new league year.

Detroit has been focused on improving its defense after a promising 2024 season, and Lopez’s signing indicates a commitment to adding experienced players who can contribute right away. While the Lions could still explore additional moves in free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft, securing a proven run-stopper like Lopez is a solid step in fortifying their defensive front.

With Lopez and Reed now in the fold, the Lions are beginning to shape their 2025 roster, aiming to build upon last season’s success and make another push for the playoffs. Fans can expect more moves in the coming days as the team looks to finalize key pieces for the
