Browns Pull Off the Ultimate Free Agency Heist: Cleveland Makes Surprising Signing That will Spark a Playoff Run

Posted on March 14, 2025 by admin

We are into the fourth day of free agents being able to agree to deals with new NFL teams. So far for the Cleveland Browns, they’ve made a few signings and you can read about those here.

Cleveland isn’t necessarily looking for high-end players in free agency, instead looking to round out areas of depth where it’s needed.

The Browns did just that at defensive end and landed a former first-round pick who the team will look to get the most out of.

Cleveland’s signing of DE Joe Tryon-Shoyinka could surprise some people

This week at A to Z Sports, we looked at the best signings around the AFC for each team. Cleveland’s was no other than bringing in the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass rusher.

“I’m not saying he’ll make a Pro Bowl or anything, but he could develop into a useful, all-around player who provides some big plays from time to time. The former first-rounder is a long, athletic pass rusher who can drop back into coverage and play the run at an OK level. He’s also a good guy to have in the locker room. At one-year, $4.75 million, there isn’t much that can go wrong with this signing and a lot that can go right.” – Evan Winter, A to Z Sports

Tryon-Shoyinka isn’t going to be a starter for the Browns but should see plenty of work as a rotational pass rusher. Don’t expect Cleveland to drop him in coverage a whole lot like he did with the Buccaneers, which should be good for his overall production. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz wants guys that can pin their ears back and get after the quarterback off the edge.

The Browns’ starter opposite of Myles Garrett would currently be Isaiah McGuire, but they could end up taking Penn State DE Abdul Carter at the No. 2 overall pick. Alex Wright and Ogbo Okoronkwo are other depth pieces that are set to battle for snaps with Tryon-Shoyinka.

The former first-round pick is still just 25 years old and has plenty of time to make a jump in his career. Tryon-Shoyinka has 15 career sacks in four seasons and has never recorded more than four in a season.

Cleveland will try to unlock some of that potential he has and hope for it to turn into more production. With it being such a low-cost deal, the risk is minimal and makes this a good signing.
