The Boston Bruins traded a defensive cornerstone in Brandon Carlo, who spent nine years with the club after being drafted in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft. The news of Carlo’s departure was a bit of a surprise, but the return could help the Bruins re-tool quickly at center. Boston added a top prospect to their league-worst young talent pool when they acquired Fraser Minten from the Toronto Maple Leafs for Carlo. Minten was widely regarded as a top-two prospect in the Maple Leafs’ system with forward Easton Cowan. The 20-year-old was also a second-round draft pick and had complied 13 points in his first 26 games with the Toronto Marlies.

Fraser Minten had burst onto the scene in the Bruins organization and already has half the goals in three games than he had in his time with the Marlies. The 6-goot-2, 195-pound forward had a stellar performance in the Providence Bruins’ recent 4-1 win over the Springfield Thunderbirds. The American Hockey League named him the First Star of the Night after he recorded a natural hat trick and an assist in the game.

Minten immediately steps into a top-five prospect spot in the Bruins’ organization and becomes a viable candidate to make the NHL roster next October as the team rebuilds after an active trade deadline that saw five forwards traded. Minten is seeing time with 2021 first-round draftee Fabian Lysell, who is still regarded as the top young talent in the franchise. Boston College’s Dean Letourneau was Boston’s first-rounder in 2024 but still needs a few years of development.

Minten found himself behind some high-end forward talent in Toronto with the likes of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander but now has a chance with Boston to make his mark with a solid AHL playoff run and a crack at making Boston’s lineup out of training camp next season.
