The 49ers strengthened their linebacker depth following Dre Greenlaw’s departure in free agency by signing veteran Luke Gifford to a one-year contract, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Originally signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Gifford has spent six seasons in the NFL with Dallas and the Tennessee Titans, primarily contributing on special teams. Over 73 games (five starts), he has recorded 95 combined tackles, one interception, two passes defensed, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

While his exact role with San Francisco remains unclear, the 29-year-old is expected to play a role on special teams under new coordinator Brant Boyer and provide depth behind star linebacker Fred Warner and his eventual counterpart.
