The New York Mets have experienced a significant transformation since the start of the 2024 season, and they are now viewed as a team that could be on the brink of World Series contention. Initially entering the season with modest expectations, the Mets managed a surprise run to the National League Championship Series, which sparked a major offseason overhaul, including the acquisition of superstar Juan Soto.
However, while the team’s offensive strength has been bolstered, there remains a critical issue in the starting rotation that could hinder their championship aspirations. Over the winter, the Mets lost key pitchers Jose Quintana and Luis Severino, and although they added Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas to the mix, the rotation still presents some concerns. Montas and Sean Manaea will be sidelined to start the season due to injuries, and there is uncertainty surrounding Kodai Senga’s recovery from his own health issues. Additionally, it’s unclear how Holmes will perform after spending most of his career in a bullpen role with the New York Yankees.
Given these questions surrounding the pitching staff, the Mets could look to make a move early in the season. One player being discussed as a potential target is Dylan Cease, the ace of the San Diego Padres. Cease, who has been a top performer over the last few seasons, including earning Cy Young Award votes in 2022 and 2024, could become available if the Padres decide to shed financial commitments. With the Padres facing ownership issues and financial constraints, they may consider trading Cease, especially since he’s heading toward free agency and is projected to secure a significant contract extension, potentially worth around $108 million for five years.
The Mets, with their deep-pocketed owner Steve Cohen, could be willing to trade younger talent to secure Cease’s services and potentially lock him up long-term before he hits the open market. While the Padres would likely need to fall out of playoff contention to make such a trade viable, the Mets appear to be a strong candidate to pursue Cease and address their rotation needs, potentially making him the centerpiece of their pitching staff for the future.
