With just a month remaining before the regular season begins, most teams have completed their offseason moves. However, the Chicago Cubs are still looking to strengthen their roster in hopes of making their first playoff appearance in five years. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, they are among the finalists to sign star free agent Alex Bregman. Cubs manager Craig Counsell has faced numerous questions about the roster since reporting to camp.
When asked by The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney if the Cubs were finished making moves, Counsell responded, “No, we’re not done. I don’t think you ever consider yourself done building a roster. Whether big or small moves, you should never consider yourself done—especially on Feb. 11. We’re still exploring options out there. Absolutely.”
While Bregman would be an ideal addition, the Cubs have other potential targets. They could pursue veteran infielder and designated hitter Justin Turner on a short-term deal or bolster their bullpen to complement recent acquisitions Ryan Pressly and Ryan Brazier. Though the Cubs are currently projected to win the NL Central, Fangraphs has them sixth in projected wins at 84.3. Adding another key piece or two could elevate them into serious contention for the National League pennant.
