In a monumental move that marks a new chapter in Carolina Panthers history, franchise icon and NFL Hall of Famer Julius Peppers is returning to the team—this time not in pads, but as a co-owner.

The announcement came earlier today from the Tepper family, who confirmed that Peppers will officially join the Panthers’ ownership group in the 2025 season. The decision not only celebrates Peppers’ legacy as one of the greatest defensive ends in NFL history but also underscores the Panthers’ commitment to rooting their future in the strength of their storied past.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Julius back to the Panthers in this historic role,” said owner David Tepper in a statement. “His leadership, passion, and connection to this team and community make him an ideal partner as we build the future of Panthers football.”

Peppers, 45, spent 10 of his 17 NFL seasons with Carolina, where he was a nine-time Pro Bowler and a beloved figure among fans and teammates. Drafted No. 2 overall by the Panthers in 2002, he amassed 159.5 career sacks—ranking him fourth on the NFL’s all-time list—and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.

“I’ve always bled black and blue,” said Peppers during the press conference. “To have the chance to contribute to this organization in a new way—off the field, at the ownership level—is an honor beyond words.”

His return is seen as a cultural and strategic boost for the franchise, which is looking to reestablish its identity after several transitional seasons. Peppers will reportedly have input on football operations, player development, and community engagement initiatives, bringing the same intensity and insight that defined his playing career.

The move also signals a growing trend of former players moving into executive and ownership roles in professional sports, bridging the gap between the locker room and the boardroom.

As the Panthers look to the 2025 season with renewed optimism, one thing is clear: Julius Peppers is back—and this time, he’s playing the long game.
