Patriots Quietly Pursuing a Shocker Deal with Carolina Panthers’ Defensive Superstar

Posted on June 4, 2025 by admin

The New England Patriots are aggressively working to rebuild their roster to reclaim their status in the 2025 NFL season, and one of their top targets may be defensive superstar Jadeveon Clowney, formerly of the Carolina Panthers. According to sources from Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports, the Patriots are among the leading teams eyeing a contract with Clowney, who was recently released by the Panthers to free up cap space. If successful, this deal would be a bold move to bolster the Patriots’ struggling defensive line.

Deal Background

The Patriots had a disappointing 2024 season, recording only 28 sacks, the lowest in the NFL for pressuring opposing quarterbacks. Under the guidance of new head coach Mike Vrabel, the team has spent heavily in free agency, bringing in big names like linebacker Robert Spillane, Harold Landry III, and cornerback Carlton Davis III. However, the edge rusher position remains a glaring weakness. Despite adding K’Lavon Chaisson and rookie Bradyn Swinson, the Patriots still need a true game-changer to elevate their defense.

Jadeveon Clowney, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, is seen as an ideal candidate. With 108 tackles for loss and 58 sacks in his career, Clowney brings experience and consistency. Last season, he recorded 5.5 sacks and 46 tackles for the Panthers, proving that at age 32, he remains a formidable threat.

Special Connection with Mike Vrabel

One reason the Patriots are a likely destination for Clowney is his prior relationship with head coach Mike Vrabel. Vrabel coached Clowney as a position coach with the Houston Texans in 2014 when Clowney was a rookie. Later, Vrabel signed Clowney to the Tennessee Titans in 2020 as their head coach. Additionally, the Patriots’ current defensive coordinator, Terrell Williams, worked with Clowney at the Titans as a defensive line coach. These connections provide a strong foundation for the Patriots to attract Clowney, not only for his skills but also for his familiarity with their coaching style.

Tactical Benefits

Clowney may not be a game-altering superstar, but he offers versatility to the defense. His ability to excel in both run defense and quarterback pressure makes him a valuable piece. According to NBC Sports Boston, Clowney could play a role in sub-packages or as a rotational edge rusher on early downs, helping the Patriots better handle teams with strong running games or mobile quarterbacks.

Moreover, signing Clowney would send a clear message to the Patriots’ locker room: no position is guaranteed. This fosters a competitive spirit, a key element in the team culture Vrabel is striving to build.

Challenges and Opportunities

While Clowney is an attractive option, the Patriots are also reportedly considering another edge rusher, Za’Darius Smith, formerly of the Detroit Lions. However, with Smith drawing interest from multiple teams, the Patriots may prioritize Clowney due to their established relationship and his potential to quickly integrate into Vrabel’s system.

The biggest challenge lies in finances. The Patriots have spent heavily in free agency, with large contracts like $104 million for Milton Williams and $63.5 million for Stefon Diggs. Balancing the salary cap to accommodate Clowney will require savvy management from the front office, particularly from Eliot Wolf, who oversees personnel decisions.

Conclusion

If the Patriots can finalize a deal with Jadeveon Clowney, it would be a major boost to their aspirations of returning to elite status. With Mike Vrabel at the helm, a defense strengthened by Clowney, Landry, and Williams could help the Patriots compete more effectively in the AFC East, where they face tough opponents like the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.
