Netflix has officially announced the release of “The UnderDog”, a compelling new documentary chronicling the life and legacy of NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. The documentary, which has generated major buzz among sports fans and film critics alike, is slated to premiere on June 20, 2025, exclusively on Netflix.
“The UnderDog” delves deep into Olajuwon’s rise from the streets of Lagos, Nigeria, to becoming one of the most dominant centers in NBA history with the Houston Rockets. Known as “The Dream,” Olajuwon led the Rockets to back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995, redefining the center position with his signature “Dream Shake.”
Featuring rare archival footage, exclusive interviews with teammates, rivals, and family members, and never-before-heard personal reflections from Olajuwon himself, the documentary promises an emotional and inspiring journey through one of basketball’s greatest underdog stories.
Netflix’s VP of Sports Content, Maria Ellis, said in a statement: “Hakeem’s story is one of perseverance, discipline, and global impact. ‘The UnderDog’ is not just a sports documentary — it’s a human story that transcends the game.”
The film is directed by award-winning documentarian Ava Grant and produced in partnership with NBA Entertainment.
Fans can expect an in-depth look at Olajuwon’s faith, work ethic, and the cultural legacy he left both in the U.S. and his native Nigeria. With a mix of sports drama, personal challenges, and triumphant moments, “The UnderDog” is shaping up to be one of the most inspiring sports documentaries of the decade.
