The announcement was made earlier today by Mariners principal owner John W. Stanton and his family, who confirmed that the franchise has finalized a historic agreement with Griffey, solidifying his deep and lasting connection to the team he helped define for a generation.

“Today is a celebration of legacy, loyalty, and leadership,” Stanton said during the official press conference at T-Mobile Park. “Ken Griffey Jr. has always been the heart of the Mariners—and now, he’s helping lead us into the future.”

Griffey, a 13-time All-Star, Hall of Famer, and arguably the most beloved player in franchise history, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity.

“Seattle is home,” Griffey said, his voice steady but emotional. “This team, this city, this community—it’s where I grew up, on and off the field. To return as a co-owner means the world to me. I’m here to build, to support, and to win.”

Known simply as “The Kid,” Griffey electrified fans with his smooth swing, iconic backwards cap, and gravity-defying catches in center field. He played 13 of his 22 MLB seasons with the Mariners, amassing 417 home runs, a .292 batting average, and a career defined as much by charisma as by statistical greatness.

While Griffey has remained involved with the organization in various ambassadorial and advisory roles since his retirement, this new chapter marks his most significant involvement since hanging up his cleats.

Griffey’s ownership stake will come with both equity and influence, as he will work closely with the front office on community outreach, player development, and long-term strategic vision.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred praised the move, saying, “Ken Griffey Jr. is a generational figure—not only in Mariners history but in all of baseball. Having him in a leadership role is a win for the Mariners, for Seattle, and for the sport.”

Fans, meanwhile, erupted in joy across social media. The hashtags #GriffeyReturns, #ForeverMariner, and #TheKidIsBack quickly shot to the top of trending charts in the Pacific Northwest.

With the Mariners continuing their pursuit of their first World Series title, the return of Ken Griffey Jr. in an ownership role brings both inspiration and a sense of unfinished business.

“I’ve got more than memories here,” Griffey said, looking out toward the outfield where he once patrolled center. “I’ve got a mission. Let’s finish what we started.”
