Pete Carroll & the Raiders officially announce plans to Re-Sign Tre’von Moehrig

Posted on February 18, 2025 by admin

As the NFL’s free agency period approaches, the Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly considering re-signing safety Tre’von Moehrig. Moehrig, drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has been a consistent starter for the Raiders, appearing in all 64 games over the past two seasons. His performance in the 2024 season was particularly notable, recording 64 solo tackles, 10 pass deflections, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and five tackles for loss.

Moehrig’s versatility and reliability have made him a key component of the Raiders’ defense. His ability to excel in both run support and pass coverage has been instrumental in the team’s defensive schemes. Given his age (25) and consistent performance, he is expected to command a significant contract in the upcoming free agency period. Some projections suggest that Moehrig could secure a deal averaging between $13 million to $15 million per year, potentially surpassing the $12 million per year extension signed by Arizona Cardinals safety Jalen Thompson.

The Raiders are entering the offseason with approximately $92.5 million in salary cap space, the second-highest in the NFL. This financial flexibility positions them well to retain key players like Moehrig. However, re-signing Moehrig would require a substantial portion of this cap space, which could impact the team’s ability to address other roster needs.

Head Coach Pete Carroll, known for his defensive expertise, is expected to play a pivotal role in the decision-making process regarding Moehrig’s future with the team. Carroll’s defensive philosophy and Moehrig’s skill set could align well, potentially influencing the Raiders’ strategy to retain the young safety.

As free agency approaches, the Raiders face a critical decision: invest in retaining a young, talented safety who has been a cornerstone of their defense, or allow him to test the market, potentially losing a key contributor to a division rival. The outcome of this decision will have significant implications for the Raiders’ defensive strategy in the upcoming season.
