SPORTS Carolina Begins Defensive Overhaul by Releasing CB Dane Jackson

Posted on February 28, 2025 by admin

The Carolina Panthers have made their first major move of the offseason, releasing veteran cornerback Dane Jackson. The decision, announced Friday, signals a shift in the team’s defensive strategy as they prepare for the 2025 season.

But what does this mean for the Panthers’ secondary, and how will they fill the void left by Jackson’s departure? Jackson’s Struggles and Limited Impact Dane Jackson’s tenure in Carolina was marred by inconsistency and injury.

After signing a two-year, $8.5 million deal last March, Jackson missed the first six games of the 2024 season due to a hamstring injury. When he returned, he was primarily used as a nickelback but struggled to make an impact. Jackson allowed a 123.6 passer rating and a 75.9% completion rate when targeted, highlighting his difficulties in coverage.

His release frees up $3.35 million in cap space, giving the Panthers financial flexibility moving forward. Youth Movement in the Secondary The Panthers are clearly investing in their young talent. Rookie Chau Smith-Wade, drafted last spring, started four games and showed promise in the slot corner role. General manager Dan Morgan has emphasized the importance of developing young players, stating, “We got some young guys on defense that we’re excited about.

” With Smith-Wade and other emerging talents, Carolina seems poised to prioritize growth and development over veteran stopgaps. Cap Space and Future Moves Jackson’s release isn’t just about performance-it’s about planning for the future. The Panthers now have approximately $30 million in cap space, which could be used to extend standout cornerback Jaycee Horn or re-sign Mike Jackson, who started all 17 games last season.

The move also opens the door for Carolina to explore free agency or the draft to improve their defensive backfield. What’s Next for the Panthers? With the new league year beginning March 12, the Panthers have options.

Whether they target a veteran free agent, double down on their young core, or make a splash in the draft, one thing is clear: Carolina is committed to building a defense that can compete in the long term.
