During the 2024 season, the Detroit Lions acquired former Cleveland Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith to help compensate for the injuries that had depleted their pass-rushing unit.

In eight games, Smith recorded 12 tackles and four sacks, showing flashes of potential as a player who could complement Aidan Hutchinson and the Lions’ defensive core in the following season.

However, on Sunday, the Lions decided to part ways with Smith, a move that sparked mixed reactions among Detroit fans. Many supporters had envisioned him playing a role in the team’s pursuit of its first-ever Super Bowl under head coach Dan Campbell.

A debate unfolded in the comments section of a local sports network’s post, with fans expressing both support and frustration regarding general manager Brad Holmes’ decision. One fan urged trust in Holmes, stating, “He knows how to build a contender.”

Others, however, were critical of the move. One fan expressed disbelief, emphasizing Smith’s availability when the defense was ravaged by injuries. “He played every game when others were out, and they let him go? Meanwhile, they bring back Marcus Davenport, who barely played?”

Another fan dismissed Smith’s impact, pointing out his lack of production in the playoffs. “He vanished when it mattered most,” they remarked. Others acknowledged his contributions but suggested he didn’t meet expectations statistically.
