Breaking: Steelers Part Ways With Another Top Veteran Key Starter Due To Failed Contract

Posted on March 17, 2025 by admin

he Pittsburgh Steelers may have made a costly mistake by delaying a contract extension for star pass rusher T.J. Watt. Despite expressing interest in an extension last season, Watt is now entering the final year of his deal without a new agreement in place. According to his older brother, J.J. Watt, Pittsburgh might have missed an opportunity for a more team-friendly deal.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, J.J. explained that the Steelers likely could have secured a discount if they had acted sooner. “The earlier you get the deal done, the better deal you get. That’s just a fact,” he said. “I believe they should have done it last year because I think there was a hometown discount available. But now, who knows?”

J.J. also pointed out that waiting could cost Pittsburgh even more, as upcoming deals for top pass rushers like Micah Parsons, Aidan Hutchinson, and Myles Garrett will set a higher market value. “That number’s gonna inch closer to four in front of than threes,” he added, suggesting Watt’s next contract could exceed $40 million per year if the Steelers delay further.

T.J. Watt has been one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers since entering the league. While last season wasn’t his best statistically, he remains an elite player. Over his eight-year career, Watt has accumulated 462 total tackles, 108 sacks, 223 quarterback hits, seven interceptions, and 33 forced fumbles. His consistent production makes him a vital piece for Pittsburgh, but their hesitation could result in a significantly higher price tag—or even risk losing him altogether.
