Former Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams has reportedly signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys. While some early reports mistakenly suggested the deal was worth $33 million, the actual contract is valued at $3 million, with incentives that could raise it to $3.5 million. This move marks a fresh start for Williams, who has had an up-and-down career due to injuries but remains a talented and versatile running back.

Williams was drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos after a standout college career at North Carolina. As a rookie, he quickly showcased his ability, rushing for 903 yards and scoring four touchdowns while also proving to be a capable receiver out of the backfield. His hard-nosed running style and ability to break tackles made him one of the most promising young running backs in the league.

Unfortunately, his momentum was derailed early in the 2022 season when he suffered a devastating knee injury, tearing his ACL, LCL, and PCL. This significant setback forced him to miss the remainder of the season and raised concerns about his long-term durability. Williams returned to action in 2023, though he was not quite the same explosive player. That year, he still managed to put up 774 rushing yards and three touchdowns, showing flashes of his previous form.

In 2024, Williams was part of a struggling Broncos offense that often found itself playing from behind, limiting his opportunities in the running game. He finished the season with 513 rushing yards and four touchdowns, but he did set a career high in receptions, catching 52 passes for 346 yards. His ability to contribute in the passing game made him an attractive option for teams in need of a dual-threat running back.

The Dallas Cowboys, who have been searching for backfield stability, saw an opportunity to bring in Williams on a relatively low-risk deal. The Cowboys’ running back situation has been uncertain since they released Ezekiel Elliott before the 2023 season. Tony Pollard took over as the lead back but struggled to replicate his previous efficiency. With Pollard’s future uncertain in Dallas, the team needed a reliable option to pair with younger backs like Deuce Vaughn.

Williams’ physical running style and pass-catching ability fit well within the Cowboys’ offensive system. New head coach Brian Schottenheimer values versatility in his running backs, and Williams could play a crucial role in both the rushing and passing attack. If he can stay healthy, he has the potential to be a significant contributor in Dallas.

For Williams, this one-year contract represents a prove-it deal. If he performs well and stays injury-free, he could earn a more lucrative contract in 2026, whether with the Cowboys or another team. If he struggles, however, his future in the NFL could become uncertain.

Ultimately, this move makes sense for both parties. The Cowboys gain a capable running back without making a long-term financial commitment, and Williams gets a fresh opportunity to reestablish himself as a premier NFL running back.
