New York City, April 12, 2025 — In a powerful act of generosity and social responsibility, New York Mets star Juan Soto is making headlines off the field by investing $15 million of his own money to turn his former New York Yankees residence into a shelter for homeless youth in New York City.

Soto, who briefly played for the Yankees before signing with the Mets, said the decision to repurpose his old Manhattan home came from a deep desire to give back to the city that has given him so much. The shelter, located near Houston Street, will provide safe housing, essential resources, and support services to vulnerable young people experiencing homelessness.

“When I first came to New York, I was welcomed with open arms,” Soto said at a press event announcing the initiative. “Now it’s my turn to give back in a real, lasting way. This isn’t just about providing a bed—it’s about creating a future.”

The project, which has been named Hope House NYC, will be developed in partnership with several local organizations that specialize in youth services and transitional housing. Once completed, the facility will feature 25 private rooms, a 24-hour support staff, educational and career readiness programs, mental health services, and recreation areas. It will also include a communal kitchen, a library, and a tech lab to help residents stay connected and build skills.

City officials estimate that over 3,800 young people experience homelessness each year in New York City. With housing prices on the rise and shelters often at capacity, Soto’s contribution comes at a crucial time.

“This is a model for how athletes and celebrities can use their platforms and resources for the greater good,” said NYC Mayor Eric Adams. “Juan Soto is stepping up in a way that will change lives, and we are proud to stand beside him in this effort.”

The shelter is expected to open in early 2026, and construction is set to begin this summer. Soto says he will remain personally involved in the project, from design decisions to selecting staff and programming partners.

Social media has exploded with praise for Soto’s actions, with fans from both the Mets and Yankees showing support. One fan posted, “Juan Soto may have changed teams, but his heart stays in New York.”

In a city that never sleeps—and where too many young people have no safe place to sleep—Soto’s investment is offering more than shelter. It’s offering hope, dignity, and a fresh start.
