Since Myles Garrett requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns, speculation has linked the Detroit Lions as a potential destination for the star pass rusher. It makes sense—the Lions need reinforcements on the edge, not just to add depth but to secure a reliable long-term complement to Aidan Hutchinson.
Earlier this month, Hutchinson and Garrett crossed paths at the NFL Honors event, where they were seen chatting in a widely shared photo alongside quarterback Jared Goff. On a recent episode of The Squeeze podcast, Hutchinson opened up about their conversation and admitted that he actively tried to recruit Garrett to Detroit.
“If Myles and I lined up together, it’d be lethal,” Hutchinson said. “We were talking at the Honors, just discussing the possibilities. While it’s probably a long shot, I’d be ecstatic if it happened. Our entire defensive line would be on another level—it’d be terrifying for opposing offenses.”
Hutchinson also spoke highly of his relationship with Garrett. “We get along well. I’ve run into him at different events over the years. He even texted me when I got injured, which was really cool. It’s always nice when guys outside your own team reach out like that. He’s a great dude. If he comes, that’d be incredible—but we’ll see what happens.”
There’s no doubt that pairing Garrett with Hutchinson would transform Detroit’s defense, making the Lions a serious Super Bowl contender. Watching those two relentlessly pressure quarterbacks every week would be must-see football.
However, making such a bold move would be a departure from general manager Brad Holmes’ usual approach. He has methodically built the Lions into a contender through careful roster construction. But after coming up short in 2024, and with championship windows never lasting forever, now might be the time to take a swing. Landing Garrett would certainly qualify as that kind of game-changing move.
